THUR: Get ready as cold weather will be moving into Denton today...

9:17 AM Thu, Nov 20, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

A strong cold front is on the way through North Texas this morning and will sweep through all of the area by this afternoon. Winds will become gusty out of the north with speeds in the 20 - 30 mph range. This should give us some wind chill readings in the lower 40s by late afternoon. Temperatures will begin to drop and should bottom out around 30 degrees on Friday morning. The air is dry so no precipitation is expected with this front.

There will be an elevated fire risk this afternoon as the winds pick up and the humidity falls. Be careful out there!

By the latter part of the weekend we will see increasing chances for rain and another front moves into the area.

Have a great day, but don't let the morning fool you, be prepared for much colder weather this afternoon.

SAT: Dangerous Fire Conditions Will Persist in the Denton Area Today...

12:55 PM Sat, Nov 15, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

A RED FLAG WARNING IS IN EFFECT ALONG AND WEST OF INTERSTATE 35.

Low humidity, dry vegetation and very gusty winds will continue a high wild fire danger for portions of north Texas including Denton County through 6pm today.

Winds will begin to calm down as the Sun sets and the atmosphere decouples. Speeds will drop to 5 - 15 mph. The calmer the wind tonight the cooler our nighttime low temperature will be. I expect that in the rural areas the temperature will drop into the upper 20s to near 30. Provided the winds die down significantly we should see temperatures fall to or just below freezing in the urban areas on Sunday morning.

Winds will come around to the south-southwest on Sunday and we will see a warming trend begin for next week.

MON: Today's weather forecast is a bit tricky...

11:34 AM Mon, Nov 10, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

Unsettled weather still in the forecast today for the Denton area. Showers and a few thunderstorms moved through the area early this morning. There were a couple of unconfirmed reports of very small hail with this activity, but most of that was to our south.

The afternoon forecast continues to give me a headache. My gut feeling is that the majority of severe thunderstorms will be south of the Denton area later today. A warm front continues to surge northward into central Texas as is bringing rich Gulf moisture with it. A dryline will begin to sharpen up in west Texas as the day progresses and begin to move toward north Texas. The tornadic potential will be greatest at the intersection of these 2 features. However, upperlevel wind shear is very impressive and has the capability of feeding storms that form and lending to the development of supercells. With that in mind any storm that shows vigorous growth and a decent life span will have the ability to go severe. Large hail and isolated tornadoes will be a distinct possibility with these storms.

Some other parameters I've been looking at this morning also indicate that showers and thunderstorms will be very efficient rain producers, so some heavy rain is quite possible late this afternoon into tonight.

With all that said, it is still very hard to pin down the areas that will be affected the most by this storm system. Cool season severe weather outbreaks rank up there near the top in forecast difficulty. Keep your weather radios handy and keep an eye on the radar this afternoon and tonight. Don't get caught by surprise.

I will try to provide updates as necessary.

SUN: Severe weather may threaten the Denton area on Monday...

9:24 PM Sun, Nov 09, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

Unsettled weather including the possibility of severe thunderstorms is expected across the Denton area over the next 36 hours. A potent upper level storm system located in western Arizona is on the move this evening and will be in our region on Monday.

Ahead of this system we will see south winds pick up overnight tonight and begin to transport rich moisture into the area from the Gulf. At the onset, moisture will be lifted up over the stable air mass we have in place currently. This combined with the upper level energy associated with the approaching storm system will spawn showers and thunderstorms early Monday. Some of the stronger storms will have the capability of producing some hail.

The difficulty with Monday afternoon's forecast is whether or not storms will eventually become surface based and not elevated in nature as the storms early in the day will be. A dryline approaching from the west will provide a focus for more organized surfaced based storms to form. However, an inhibiting factor for strong storm formation may be the fact that the early day activity will not allow our atmosphere to destabilize enough to realize its full severe potential. This will be the item to watch during the day on Monday. Should we manage to see some sunshine and a bit of decent warming the potential for tornadic supercell thunderstorms will increase.

At any rate you should be alert for rapidly changing weather conditions with the potential for severe thunderstorms throughout the day on Monday.

I should be able to provide an early update tomorrow morning with the latest details and trends. Keep your weather radios handy.

WED: Cold front still on tap to move through the Denton area tonight...

1:50 PM Wed, Nov 05, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

Changes in our weather are coming this evening. Currently the cold front mentioned before is moving through the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles. However, a sharp dryline is beginning to develop across west central Texas. The dryline may make it into the western sections of our area this evening just before being overtaken by the cold front. A few storms, some potentially severe, will be possible late this afternoon mainly to our west along the dryline. Moisture continues to flow northward in advance of the whole system on strong southerly winds. I've seen some wind gusts around the area reach 40mph and a Wind Advisory is still in effect through this evening.

Winds will shift to a northerly direction overnight as the front makes it through the area. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible with the frontal passage. Again with the strong dynamics of the system I can't rule out the possibility of isolated severe storms. However, with the front passing through during the night time hours (least amount of heating) the chances won't be quite as good as they would with a late afternoon passage. Also the majority of the energy in this storm system will pass to the north of us.

Skies will clear, the humidity will drop and the temperatures will pleasant. The coolest periods should occur on Friday morning and Saturday morning with lows dropping into the low-mid 40s. Daytime highs will be in the mid 70s. Winds will pick up out of the south again as we get into the weekend and begin bringing in moisture ahead of our next system that is forecast to arrive during the Sunday to Monday timeframe.

Have a great Wednesday.

TUE: Election Day Wind...What's New?!

4:22 PM Tue, Nov 04, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

I guess all the political HOT AIR is blowing hard today and winding up in North Texas. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory effective until 6pm tomorrow evening that includes the Denton area. Winds will be gusty up to 35mph through tomorrow evening.

We will see a cold front move through our area tomorrow night. A chance of showers and thunderstorms will accompany the front. We will see cooler temperatures and dry conditions for the remainder of the week. Temperatures will slowly warm through the weekend in advance of our next front.

If you haven't voted yet...get out there and do it! It's your right and duty as a good citizen of the greatest country on Earth.

FRI: Pleasant weather for Halloween along with a local earthquake?!

1:02 PM Fri, Oct 31, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

Halloween forecast looking very nice for candy gathering this evening.

The hourly forecast for Denton courtesy of WeatherToGolf.com:

6 PM Clear 78 degrees SSE winds at 7 mph gusting to 9 mph.
7 PM Clear 74 degrees SSE winds at 6 mph gusting to 7 mph.
8 PM Clear 70 degrees SSE winds at 5 mph gusting to 6 mph.
9 PM Clear 69 degrees SSE winds at 5 mph gusting to 6 mph.

We will see pleasant weather conditions continue in the Denton area for the next several days. A weak upper level system will move across the area on Saturday and will drop the humidity levels over the next several days. This will help lower our temperatures back into the normal range for this time of the year.

SPECIAL NOTE:

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake occurred at 11:25pm Thursday night followed by a 3.0 magnitude earthquake at 12:01 am. Both were in the Grand Prairie/Irving area. The epicenters were calculated to be in the Shady Grove area. A nice scary start to Halloween 2008! More information can be found on the small quake HERE at the USGS.

WED: Strong cold front moving into the Denton area today...

8:46 AM Wed, Oct 22, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

A strong cold front is moving into the area this morning. A couple of thunderstorms have formed ahead it in the last hour. The front itself is approximately along a Wichita Falls to Sweetwater line. It should move though the Denton area before noon. A better chance of showers and thunderstorms will be along and behind the front itself.

Rain chances will end from west to east this afternoon and much cooler and windy weather will be ushered in as the front continues into east Texas. We will see lows dropping into the mid 40s tonight with the wind making it feel somewhat cooler.

The rest of the week will be dry and cool with a couple of reinforcing shots of cool air from a couple of more fronts making it into the area. We could drop into the upper 30s Friday morning. Fall is definitely here.

Have a great Wednesday.

WED: The front is in the area and change is not far behind...

9:10 AM Wed, Oct 15, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

The front is finally on our doorstep as I type this. It's position is between Denton and Decatur. It is moving slowly eastward and will move through the area by mid morning.

A few showers have been moving along with the front, but are showing some signs of weakening. We will see some scattered showers around mainly early today, but the majority of the action will be to our east and southeast. Abundant gulf moisture is flowing in from the south and will meet up with the front probably around the Tarrant and Dallas county regions and then join the front and move off to the east. Could be some decent rainfall totals in east Texas from this system, but that doesn't help us too much here in the Denton area.

Cool, dry and pleasant weather will be with us through the remainder of the week. Highs will be in the upper 60s and lows will be dropping into the mid 40s by Friday morning.

Here is a radar shot courtesy of WeatherToGolf.com taken at 9:07am. You can see the scattered light rain in our area and the heavier activity to the south.

TUE: Muggy conditions today will give way to more "fall like" weather on Wednesday...

11:26 AM Tue, Oct 14, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

Spring-like weather is on tap for the Denton area today. The much talked about cold front is stuck between us and Childress Texas. It won't make much progress towards us during the day today, but will finally begin moving through the area this evening and overnight.

Today we will see warm and humid conditions across the area. Even with mostly cloudy skies temperatures will make it easily into the low-mid 80s. An occasional sprinkle or some mist can't be ruled out due to the fact that the atmosphere is loaded with moisture. As the front enters the area tonight we will see it begin to interact with all this gulf moisture and expect to see some showers and a few thunderstorms get going.

Wednesday looks to be breezy and much cooler with on and off showers and thunderstorms continuing. Rain chances will taper off as the day goes by and we can look for a much cooler night with lows in the low to mid 50s.

The rest of the week will be pleasant with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.

Enjoy your Tuesday and keep the umbrellas ready for use beginning late today into tomorrow.

SUN: Another breezy humid day then changes are on the way for Denton...

10:38 PM Sun, Oct 12, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

The humidity will continue to increase for another day or two as a strong upper level system strengthens in the Rockies. This will keep the Denton area in warm and humid conditions through Wednesday.

This of course means that the golf tournament I will be covering tomorrow on Columbus Day will be a bit on the sweaty side. However the wind will help peeps like me (in my paparazzi cart) stay a bit cooler than those that are participating and playing in the TWU/FOA tournament tomorrow. Be prepared with fluids to make it through the tournament. Below you will find my hour by hour forecast for the tournament.

Changes in Denton weather will be nice as the week progresses. Our weather should be unsettled for the majority of the week with temperatures cooling after the frontal passage and with several upper level disturbances to move over the area we will see some chances of rain.

As usual this time of year we are going through the changes of seasons and we can continue to expect changes to usher us into a fall weather pattern.

Have a great week everyone and be prepared for some unsettled weather.

Here is the area specific hour by hour forecast for tomorrow's golf tournament:

8:30am: Temp 72 degrees, Humidity 84%, Wind SE at 7mph
10:30am: Temp 73 degrees, Humidity 79%, Wind SSE at 10mph
12:30pm: Temp 79 degrees, Humidity 62%, Wins SSE at 10-15 mph
2:30pm: Temp 80 degrees with a heat index of 82 degrees, Humidity 58%, Wind SE 14 with gusts to 18mph

Good luck in the tournament tomorrow and if you see me chasing you around in my cart, stop me and ask me to get a picture of you and your team.

TUE: Windy and cooler today in Denton...

11:27 AM Tue, Oct 07, 2008 |
Robert Vermillion   E-mail   News tips

A WIND ADVISORY is in effect until 6pm this evening for the Denton area. Winds will pick up as the days goes on, but will drop off rapidly after sunset.

Drier air will continue to filter into the region behind a the cold front which will make for cool nights and warm days through the end of the week.

The cold front I mentioned yesterday that is supposed to arrive late this weekend may be held up longer than originally thought. If that is the case Monday's golf tournament may be more warm and muggy than nice and cool. I still need to see some consistency in the long range forecast before I make a call although I keeping my fingers crossed for an early arrival.

MON: Welcome rain in the area today...

The heaviest of the showers have moved through the area this morning, but don't put the umbrella away just yet. More showers are forming to our west-southwest. Also if we manage to get much daytime heating we could see some isolated storms become severe later this afternoon. However, that is a "big" if. Rainfall totals so far around the area vary from .25" to .75" with light rain continuing as I write this.

Here is a recent shot from WeatherToGolf.com's radar imagery captured around 8:15am:

Computer models continue to indicate the strongest cold front of the season affecting the area late this weekend. We'll be able to fine tune that forecast as the week progresses. I, along with a lot of golfers will be watching that forecast as the 2nd annual TWU/FOA golf tournament will be on Columbus Day and it could be a very cool day for golf.
